Late Permian to Late Triassic Large Igneous Provinces: Timing, Eruptive Style and Paleoenvironmental Perturbations

چکیده
The emplacement of the Siberian Traps, Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) and Wrangellia have been linked to end-Permian, end-Triassic mass extinctions, Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE), respectively. Exploring timing, eruptive styles, volatile degassing these Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) is crucial understand their causal link catastrophic environmental crises that punctuated Triassic. In this study we review main characteristics LIPs, emphasizing common features differences, discussing aspects are still in debate. Estimates CO 2 budgets emissions from three LIPs based on Nb content little evolved basalts highlight early Traps CAMP high-Ti volcanics were quite -rich. Climatically driven biogeographic provinces of Late Triassic tropical Pangea.
Although continents were coalesced into the single landmass Pangea, Late Triassic terrestrial tetrapod assemblages are surprisingly provincial. In eastern North America, we show that assemblages dominated by traversodont cynodonts are restricted to a humid 6° equatorial swath that persisted for over 20 million years characterized by "semiprecessional" (approximately 10,000-y) climatic fluctuati...
متن کاملProlonged Permian Triassic ecological crisis recorded by molluscan dominance in Late Permian offshore assemblages.
The end-Permian mass extinction was the largest biotic crisis in the history of animal life, eliminating as many as 95% of all species and dramatically altering the ecological structure of marine communities. Although the causes of this pronounced ecosystem shift have been widely debated, the broad consensus based on inferences from global taxonomic diversity patterns suggests that the shift fr...
متن کاملMethane Release from Igneous Intrusion of Coal during Late Permian Extinction Events
Unusually large and locally variable carbon isotope excursions coincident with mass extinctions at the end of the Permian Period (253 Ma) and Guadalupian Epoch (260 Ma) can be attributed to methane outbursts to the atmosphere. Methane has isotopic values (dC) low enough to reduce to feasible amounts the carbon required for isotopic mass balance. The duration of the carbon isotopic excursions an...
متن کاملOsmium isotope evidence for a large Late Triassic impact event
Anomalously high platinum group element concentrations have previously been reported for Upper Triassic deep-sea sediments, which are interpreted to be derived from an extraterrestrial impact event. Here we report the osmium (Os) isotope fingerprint of an extraterrestrial impact from Upper Triassic chert successions in Japan. Os isotope data exhibit a marked negative excursion from an initial O...
متن کاملA large predatory archosaur from the Late Triassic of Poland
We describe a new large predatory archosaur, Smok wawelski gen. et sp. nov., from the latest Triassic (latest Norian–early Rhaetian; approximately 205–200 Ma) of Lisowice (Lipie Śląskie clay−pit) in southern Poland. The length of the recon− structed skeleton is 5–6 m and that of the skull 50–60 cm, making S. wawelski larger than any other known predatory archosaur from the Late Triassic and Ear...
